Following the last week’s wacky events, the modern Greek language dictionary deserves an update; from now on, a “bail-out agreement” could be called a “breakthrough deal”, the “forged qualification documents’ could now just be renamed “irregular papers” and because we are almost officially in summer, let’s just name “chocolate” a “low-carb green salad” and live long and happily ever after.
The flame for the Olympic games in Brazil has been lit in Southern Greece the 22nd of April 2016. The torch will travel across Greece for the next week before it is officially handed over to Brazil. It will culminate at the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on August the 5th. A refugee team will be participating in the Olympic Games of Rio 2016, as a message of hope to all those hit by the refugee crisis this year. Rio 2016 is now well and truly on, embracing the hardships of 2016 characterized by the refugee crisis.
Belgium is observing days of mourning following bomb attacks in Brussels that left 34 people dead and about 250 wounded. The so-called Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attacks and has warned that more would follow. Many cities around the world illuminated their landmarks in the colors of the Belgian flag in a show of solidarity for the bomb attacks. South Africa has joined the international community in strongly condemning the terrorist attacks that took place the morning of the 22nd of March 2016.
Members of the Coast Guard serving the Greek islands described, during a press conference, the tragic images they are facing daily, while trying to rescue migrants and refugees from drowning in the Aegean Sea. The numbers of the unaccompanied refugee children arriving to the Greek islands from the Turkish coast is showing a tremendous increase in comparison to those of the first quarter of 2016.
